This course introduces mediators to the use of narrative and dialogical ideas as powerful frameworks for understanding and transforming conflict. Drawing on narrative theory, participants will explore how the stories people tell shape their experiences, relationships, and identities in the context of disputes. Through a dialogical lens, the course emphasizes the creation of authentic, respectful conversations that open space for multiple perspectives and new meanings to emerge.

Participants will learn to identify and deconstruct dominant conflict narratives, support parties in re-authoring their stories, and foster dialogue that promotes connection, empathy, and mutual understanding. Practical exercises, reflective discussions, and real-world case studies will help mediators integrate these approaches into their everyday practice, enhancing their capacity to respond with curiosity, creativity, and compassion.

By the end of the course, mediators will have developed skills to:

•   Recognize and work with the power of stories in shaping conflict and resolution.

•   Facilitate dialogue that values each person’s voice and experience.

•   Encourage re-storying and collaborative meaning-making between parties.

•   Deepen their reflective practice and presence as mediators.

This course is ideal for both new and experienced mediators seeking to enrich their practice with narrative insight and dialogical engagement.
