Week 1:  Financial Settlements – Through the Mediator’s Lens (5th June)

This practical 2-hour session is designed for family mediators who want to build confidence in facilitating financial discussions in mediation. We’ll explore how to apply the legal principles behind financial settlements—particularly the Section 25 factors—in a clear, neutral, and client-friendly way. You’ll gain practical tools to help clients create asset schedules, plan budgets and reality-test proposals, while understanding when to signpost for legal advice. With interactive exercises and a realistic case study, this session focuses on helping mediators support separating couples to reach informed, fair, and workable financial agreements.

Week 2: Pensions and Family Law (10th June)

A practical session to build confidence around pensions and separation. You’ll gain a clear understanding of the different types of pensions, including private and state schemes, and explore the family law orders available for pensions on divorce. We’ll look at the pros and cons of each type of order, when to involve a Pensions Expert on Divorce (PODE), and how to approach real-life scenarios with a case study. You’ll also receive sample wording for a Memorandum of Understanding to support your mediation practice.

Week 3: High Net Worth Clients and Sharing Principles (19th June)

This session explores how to approach financial settlements in cases that go beyond needs—ideal for family mediators working with high-net-worth clients. We’ll discuss key issues such as the sharing principle, valuing complex financial assets, pre-marital assets, wealth acquired after separation, inheritance, and pre-nuptial agreements. The session will also highlight possible future changes in the law and what to watch out for, helping you stay informed and better support your clients going forward.
