This three day Child Inclusive Mediation Training meets FMC standards and requirements, updated on 1/9/18 and has been approved by the FMC.

This is an assessed course which includes pre and post course reading and assignments and 3 days of in person training (total 40 hours).

Day 1, 2 & 3 will be held in the centre of London.

Course Requirements:

  1. You must be an Accredited FMC mediator.
  2. You must have completed a CIM Awareness and Understanding Day before starting this course.
  3. You must have a letter of recommendation from your PPC prior to acceptance on the course.

Please ensure that you have met the above and that you apply in sufficient time to complete the pre course assignments before day 1.

Hearing the ‘Voice of the Child’ is a vital part of our role as Family Mediators; indeed, we are required to offer this opportunity for children and young people aged 10 and over.

This course will enhance your work with parents and give you confidence to use the skills and knowledge to directly include children and young people in the mediation process in a meaningful way.  Where appropriate, their views can be taken forward into parental decision making as part of the mediation. These skills and techniques can be used as part of your mediation practice following FMA/FMC Policy and as a Child Consultant in Collaborative Practice where appropriate. We will examine the various models of CIM, including online.

The course is highly interactive with a mixture of role plays, discussions and presentations. It builds on our knowledge of child development and research and draws on the experience of Child Inclusive practice in the UK and other jurisdictions.

The course is assessed; it is open to FMC Accredited Mediators and is 40 hours in total, which includes some preparatory study prior to the three training days and a number of follow up tasks, to be completed after the course. Applicants MUST first have attended a one-day CIM Awareness and Understanding Course.

The trainers are Beverly Sayers and Philippa Johnson. Beverley is co-author of the ‘What about Me’ Family Solutions Group Report and is the FMC liaison with Cafcass and the FJYPB. Philippa was the consulting editor for Lisa Parkinson’s book on Child-inclusive Mediation, Conversations with Children, and is a member of the FMA Working Group on Child-Inclusive Mediation.
