With around 1 in 7 people being neurodivergent, it’s increasingly likely that one or more parties in any mediation will process, communicate and experience the world differently. Yet many neurodivergent adults remain undiagnosed or misunderstood – their behaviours sometimes interpreted as resistance, avoidance or disengagement when they are, in fact, responses to stress or overload.

This thoughtful and practical session helps mediators recognise, understand and adapt to the diverse ways neurodivergent adults show up in mediation. It invites participants to move beyond assumptions and toward a more inclusive, compassionate and effective practice.

Participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of common neurodivergent profiles in adults (including autism, ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia) and how these influence communication, processing and emotional regulation.
  • Learn to recognise signs of overwhelm or masking, and develop strategies to create a calmer, safer environment for all parties.
  • Explore practical adaptations to reduce stress and increase participation.
  • Build confidence in using neuro-affirming communication and language which fosters trust, clarity and dignity.
  • Reflect on our unconscious biases and assumptions.

By the end of the session, mediators will feel more confident and better equipped to support neurodivergent adults – ensuring every voice is truly heard, every perspective understood and every mediation process more inclusive.
