A Guide for Mediators: Supporting Parents of Neurodivergent Children Through Separation
Around 1 in 7 people are neurodivergent, and diagnoses – particularly of autism and ADHD – are rising year on year. Every mediator will at some stage work with separated parents raising neurodivergent children. For these families, the mediation process can be a lifeline – but only if mediators understand the unique ways neurodivergence shapes children’s experiences, emotions and needs.
This practical session invites mediators to step into the world of neurodivergent children. We’ll explore how mediation can help parents reduce distress rather than add to it.
Participants will:
- Gain a clear understanding of what neurodivergence means and how it presents in daily life, school and family dynamics.
- Examine how parental separation impacts neurodivergent children, including the emotional and behavioural challenges they may face.
- Learn to guide parents with empathy and insight, offering realistic strategies and communication tips to support their child through change.
- Build confidence in managing conflict between parents – especially when one parent believes a diagnosis and the other does not.
- Take away practical tools, conversation frameworks, and language to use immediately in mediation practice.
