We are delighted to announce that His Honour Stephen Wildblood KC has accepted the FMA’s invitation to become a Vice President of the organisation.
Stephen practised as a specialist family barrister for 27 years. During that time he specialised predominantly in family finance cases, as well as disputes over children in both Private and Public Law. He was appointed to the Circuit Bench in 2007 and went on to serve as Designated Family Judge for Bristol and the surrounding counties from 2013. He is now an associate member of 3PB Barristers Chambers and is working with consultant clinical psychologist, Dr Freda Gardner, offering non court-based assistance to families who might otherwise find themselves involved in Family Court proceedings.
Stephen is a firm believer that all types of family litigation should be a last resort, and that people should be assisted to find solutions through alternative means such as mediation. His passion for shining a light on the human stories behind the law extends beyond the courtroom. He has written novels and plays that explore the wider social circumstances of those who find themselves involved in family law litigation. He has written and directed “Daisy Through The Looking Glass”, an innovative production which holds a mirror up to the family law system and the very real impact it can have on families.
Anna Vollans, current Chair of the FMA, said of the appointment:
“The FMA exists to promote the highest standards of family mediation, support practitioners, and champion child-focused, holistic practice. Stephen’s commitment to working with families and to minimising the psychological, emotional, and financial impact of family breakdown aligns closely with the aims of the FMA. We are honoured to have his voice, expertise and passion associated with the Association in this way.”
On accepting the invitation, Stephen said:
“I am absolutely over the moon to be offered the opportunity to serve as the Vice-President of FMA. It is with delight that I accept that offer. It will be wonderful to work with everyone at FMA and develop the cause of mediation, something in which I believe wholeheartedly.”
We very much look forward to working with Stephen and warmly welcome him to the role.
Through the Standards and Documents Committee the FMA has prepared guidance to support mediators in explaining confidentiality to clients prior to a MIAM.
We recognise that this can be a challenging area to navigate, balancing the requirements of the Standards, Guidance and Code with the need to be empathetic and to build rapport during early contact with prospective mediation clients. This guidance sets out what MIAM participants need to know in advance of their first individual meeting, and how mediators can ensure they are working safely and within the relevant requirements from the outset.
Those involved in drafting the guidance are grateful to members of YFMA for ‘road-testing’ the note with us and helping to ensure the final version is clear and accessible.
