Child Support Agency – information for parents owed historical debt

The Department for Work and Pensions has published guidance for parents owed historical debt under the Child Support Agency system. The DWP is going to write to both parents where the historical debt is over £500 and the case is less than 10 years old, or it is over £1000 and the case is more than 10 years old. To fit within the definition of historical debt the case must not involve any on-going liability; there must have been no payment in the past 3 months; and the debt must have built up under the CSA, although it may have moved to the Child Maintenance Service as part of a case closure.

The parent with care may apply to have the debt collected by, for example, the DWP making deductions from the paying parent’s earnings; sending regular or lump sum deduction orders to the paying parent; exceptionally, sending court orders to the paying parent.
